Save our Mother Nature like Lord Shiva

Mondays are dedicated to Lord Shiva. Not just during Shravan, Bholenath is worshipped on Mondays during the entire year. But Shravan Somwar vrat is of special significance. There is a legend associated with the Moon God that explains why worshipping Lord Shiva on Monday is significant.

Shiva, who is referred to as the destroyer, saved the universe by consuming a lethal substance called Halahala, that emerged from the ocean during Samudra Manthan.

Halahala, also known as Kalakoota, was a poison that was the first item to surface from the ocean bed. It was so lethal that it could have wrecked the universe. Therefore, to save creation and lives on earth, Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma and the Devas visited Kailash to seek Lord Shiva's help.In a lay man's words, Halahala refers to the harmful waste that gets dumped into the ocean by the human race. It causes massive damage to the underwater creatures and eventually destabilises the eco-system. And this allegory interestingly mirrors today's situation, where innumerable species have gone extinct owing to the harm caused to Mother Nature by man.

But why Shiva chose to grab Halahala in his neck without letting it reach his stomach?

By not letting the Halahala enter his body beyond the neck, Lord Shiva has taught an essential life lesson. This action explains that no matter how destructive enmity and hatred are, they can be contained for the welfare of humanity.
